Character Profiles

Note

My character profiles turned out really well and I was pleased with the information I managed to dig up on each of the characters, including but not limited to the idea of how the show started and what controversies the show caused.

Concept Art

Note

The concept Art was just representing the colour theme I was aiming to be used in the game

Creation

Note

I used tutorial videos help me create my idea on Unity but unfortunately it didn't help me in the long run. Due to issues out of my control which mainly consisted of using various versions of Unity

Evaluation

Note

The planning, evaluation included, was very easy but this didn't contextualise when it came to using Unity.

Mind Map

Note

The mind map proved very easy to implement but unfortunately I wasn't able to enact any of what I included in Unity.

Pre-planning

Note

My crude pre-planning document surprisingly proved very effective and I was very pleased to have included it in my research folder.

Reflection

26/9/24

Today, we were informed we had to create a video edit with using different shot types and include a masked title sequence because, we had to have a better understanding of the software since we would be using it for this project and future ones

Firstly, I picked one image out of each shot type given to us from teams. I felt like creating a Halloween themed found footage video because of spooky season coming up.

Once I created an empty template on premier pro, I imported all the handpicked images to the project and greyed them out to give them a classic horror theme, again because I felt it suited October quite well, due its association with Halloween

Next, I looked for horror themed music using YouTube because of its accessibility and ease of use and decided on the theme to Texas Chainsaw Massacre because it is one of my favourite horror films that has a lot of interesting behind the scenes facts and the brilliant use of practical effects. Then I looked for a generic scream on YouTube because sound effects such as this one used to be used in older films and I believe with the addition of a black and white filter, it would look like something created in earlier renditions of horror films. Once I found suitable audio, I downloaded them as an MP3 and imported them on my project.

I put them in a sequence, but I wasn't completely happy with it because, not all the images had a good association with the audio use, but I found workarounds by leaving suspenseful gaps between shots and using a small amount of sound effects, since I wanted to keep it suspenseful.

03/10/24

Today, I was informed I had to incorporate foley sounds and masked text. Incorporating the foley sounds was easy enough since I didn't include a lot of sound effects, due to my want of wanting to keep it suspenseful. I decided to use a running sound effect because it would coincide with some of the visuals well, due to footage being of people running. But, when it came to using masked text, I ended up having to watch a tutorial video and I was able to have masked text as the opening sequence and it didn't delay me by much, courtesy of the tutorial, fortunately. Due to time constraints, I ended up submitting a non-exported document and a partially complete reflection document because I failed to keep up with the reflection document because of my focus on the project itself and the premier pro document failed to export multiple times.

In my next lesson, I was given a rundown of the health and safety involved in working with camera and lighting equipment. I was also given the chance to get a feel for the equipment and act out any scenes that I wanted in my FMP. But I didn't feel comfortable with doing so because I've never liked being the centre of attention, so I watched and picked up ideas from what other people were doing because, I felt when it came to having to act out the scenes I'd have a better understanding, since I had watched what other people were doing.

04/10/24

Today, we were informed to create a game of our choosing so, after a bit of brainstorming I remembered what made me want to take this course. I had watched some videos remaking the video game, Simpsons & Hit and Run and I became infatuated with the idea on recreating the original game on Unity because of the nostalgia and childhood memories associated with the game. So, I started working on my pre-planning document and breaking it up into multiple documents, once I realised how much planning I would have to do.

Next, I organized my files more categorically so it wouldn't become such a momentous task later. Then, I became stumped after creating research, planning and risk assessment document but I was informed my next focus point should be a script and character profiles. I was able to create a script, and I had no major issues, but some minor issues included formatting it into a script since I was using the appropriate software.

Sadly. I couldn't start a character profile document due to time constraints, but I didn't mind since I was happy with the progress I made today. Throughout the creation of my pre-planning documentation, so far, I came to no major delays, and I have completed more than half of the required documentation for me to start creating the game because of my decision to move past the problem of formatting the script correctly.

09/10/24

Today, I started working on my character profile document. I'll admit, I took my time on it but finding information on already existing characters was a bit of a challenge due to the information being inconsistent because of the actual show the game is based off being a long running show and some of the information wasn't thought to be important when it came out so I stuck with the official wiki pages targeted at the simpsons, because I knew the information would be more detailed due to info coming from long standing fans of the show.

10/10/24

I continued working on my character profile document and I wish I hadn't faffed around with the presentation because I just wanted better formatting for the work, so everything was readable and accessible but due to doing that I delayed myself unnecessarily.

16/10/24

Today, I separated all the work I had done into different PowerPoint documents, as to not to cause confusion and I created a storyboard to give a better insight as to what I wanted to create and treated it as a very rough idea as to what the first level will look like.

17/10/24

Today, I was told I needed to create a document on the cultural aspects of the game were creating and controversy surrounding our projects because I need a better understanding of my target audience and whether it's appropriate for the intended audience. I plan on looking for articles addressing any controversies associated with the game.

18/10/24

Unity has been an absolute curse today, the previous and more up to date version I was using is unavailable. So, I attempted to convert it the older version with no success which is made me have to make a new project but the tutorial I'm using to assist me is proving fruitless because it's using the 2022 version while I'm now using the 2021 version, and I've already come into issues that I don't know how to solve. I did not anticipate this scenario, and it shows in my contingency plan because I thought I would have the issue of going to an old version to a new version and not vice-versa. I've decided to submit all my work and not include what I've done in Unity, I'm unable to screenshot anything either due to it crashing moments ago but I've accepted the fact I won't be able to include anything from Unity but I'm hoping the pre-planning documents will carry me through. I've learnt that I need to look for alternatives other than using Unity, because issues like this are unavoidable since I don't have access to anything powerful to run Unity, nor is it be possible to upgrade Unity on the college computers.

23/10/24

Today, I was able to hand in my pre-planning documents, but I made no leeway in terms of my Unity project. I attempted to continue following the tutorial but there was interference including Mixamo not opening so I followed through with my contingency and started watching a different tutorial, but it failed at the first hurdle when the websites needed being blocked. I'm not sure how I'm going to proceed since my contingency plan has fallen through.

•Are you happy with the concept?

Yes, I've been meaning to put this idea to paper for a long time, but I found the idea daunting up until now. I decided to do it now because this could quite possibly be my last course.

•Why are you happy?

Because I can work independently and I'm comfortable in the position I find myself in. I'm also happy with the skills I have learnt throughout this unit, although I haven't used all the skills in this unit, like title sequences but I believe this skill especially, will be used in my FMP due to my want to distance myself from using Unity, due to all the technical difficulties using it.

•How does it fit with the focus group responses?

It aligns with what most people said under each topic, including the mention of comedy being people's favourite genre.

•What problems have you had and how did you tackle them?

I had an issue with having to import my project on to older versions of unity and I couldn't find a solution for it. Fortunately, though I was able to use the new version of unity but mixamo wasn't working so I followed a different tutorial, but I wasn't able to access the necessary websites due to them being blocked. My solution was to not follow a tutorial and attempt to make something with the need of a tutorial. Not being able to use Unity effected my projected severely but a compromise was met since my work would be marked as a script instead of a Unity project due to the issues like the needed assets being inaccessible. I will be avoiding Unity from now on due to it being accessible most of the time since I don't have a device powerful enough to run the needed software and the college computers being unreliable.

•What are you going to do next?

I'm going to continue working on my production and pre-planning document.

Research

Note

I was very pleased with the in-depth research I managed to conduct. I believe this unit represents my passion best.

Risk Assessment

Script

Note

The script turned out to be exhausting and the formatting remained inconsistent but I was proud of the detailing.

Script

Homer

Level 1, Mission 1: The Cola Capers

Setting: The Simpson family home.

Scene 1: Living Room

(Marge Simpson walks into the room, visibly upset. Homer is seated on the couch watching TV.)

Marge Simpson:

Homie, somebody ate every dessert in the house. I need you to run to the store and pick up some of that ice cream with the miniature pies in it.

Homer Simpson:

Well, it must have been one of our kids — probably Milhouse.

(Marge raises an eyebrow but says nothing. Homer gets up reluctantly and heads out the door.)

Scene 2: Kwik-E-Mart

(Homer arrives at the Kwik-E-Mart and walks up to the counter, where Apu is restocking shelves.)

Homer Simpson:

Hey, Apu. Give me a cola, and I need another bucket of ice cream with mini pies.

Apu Nahasapeemapetilon:

What happened to the ice cream with mini pies your wife bought this morning?

Homer Simpson:

Well, I probably ate it. I don't remember things too good.

(Apu rolls his eyes and hands Homer the requested items.)

Scene 3: Outside the Kwik-E-Mart

(Homer walks out of the store with the items and hears Bart's voice calling out to him.)

Bart Simpson:

Congratulations, Homer. Mission complete. Go back home and talk to Mom to start the next mission.

(Homer looks around, confused but pleased, and heads back home.)

Fade out.

Bart:

Level 2, Mission 1: Detention Deficit Disorder

Scene 1: Bart and Milhouse on the Street

(Bart and Milhouse are walking down a sunny street. Bart looks frustrated, kicking a pebble as he walks. Milhouse follows a few steps behind, oblivious and humming to himself.)

Bart

I gotta get the new Bonestorm, or I'll be as uncool as Milhouse!

Milhouse (offended)

I'm standing right here, Bart...

Bart (nervously backpedaling)

H-hey, that's great!

(Milhouse nervously looks around, glancing over his shoulder.)

Milhouse

You better get outta here, Bart. Principal Skinner's looking for everyone who skipped school today. And when you're caught, it's expulsion, Bart. EXPULSION!

Bart (mocking, waving it off)

'Fraid not!

(Suddenly, Principal Skinner appears dramatically from behind a bush, pointing an accusatory finger.)

Skinner (determined)

I'll get you, Bart! Just like I got Charlie and Nam!

Bart (smirking)

'Fraid not!

Skinner (matching his tone)

'Fraid so!

Bart

'Fraid not!

Skinner

'Fraid so! Oh, damn your lightning-fast wit!

(Bart bolts down the street. Skinner takes a deep breath and starts chasing after him.)

---

Scene 2: Skinner Chasing Bart

(Bart weaves through the street, dodging pedestrians, cars, and random obstacles with practiced ease. Behind him, Skinner clumsily barrels through, tripping over trash cans and narrowly avoiding collisions.)

Skinner (shouting breathlessly)

I'll educate you a new one!

(Bart glances back, laughing.)

Skinner (grabbing a nearby object and throwing it like a grenade)

Fire in the hole!

(Bart ducks just in time, the object landing harmlessly in the street. Bart darts into a convenience store, slamming the door behind him. Skinner stumbles to a halt outside, catching his breath.)

Skinner (grumbling to himself)

Blast that boy and his youthful energy...

---

Scene 3: Inside the Convenience Store

(Bart leans against a shelf, catching his breath. He looks around and spots Jimbo standing near the counter, smugly holding up a copy of Bonestorm.)

Jimbo (smirking)

Too late, losers! I got the last game. Four-finger discount!

(Jimbo pockets the game, laughing triumphantly.)

Jimbo

Haha... some crazy lady destroyed all the rest!

(Bart sighs and shakes his head, looking defeated.)

Bart (to himself)

When will they learn... video games don't kill people, they just kill their minds.

(Bart walks out of the store, shoulders slumped, as Jimbo continues to laugh in the background. The camera slowly pans out as Bart disappears into the distance.)

Fade Out.

Lisa:

Level 3, Mission 1: Nerd Race Queen

Outside the Comic Book Store

(Lisa Simpson, in her Nerd Race Queen attire, walks hurriedly up to Comic Book Guy, who is standing outside the store, looking frazzled.)

Lisa Simpson:

I need to find my stupid brother. Have you seen him?

Comic Book Guy:

Yes, yes; can't talk now. I must get the last copy of the new Itchy & Scratchy Adventures comic. It's the controversial issue in which they finally kiss! Assist me, and I will aid you with your dilemma.

(Lisa rolls her eyes but reluctantly nods. They both sprint toward the Itchy & Scratchy Comic Store, where another nerd is ahead of them.)

Scene 2: Itchy & Scratchy Comic Store

(Lisa and Comic Book Guy manage to outpace the nerd and grab the comic book. They exit triumphantly, Comic Book Guy clutching the comic like a trophy.)

Lisa Simpson:

Now can you tell me if you've seen my pointy-headed nuisance?!

Comic Book Guy:

Silence. I must get this comic into a Mylar bag before it deteriorates to near-mint condition, heaven forbid!

(Lisa groans in frustration as they head toward The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop.)

Scene 3: The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop

(Inside the store, Comic Book Guy meticulously places the comic into a Mylar bag with exaggerated care. Lisa taps her foot impatiently.)

Comic Book Guy:

Now to get this inky treasure into its Mylar sanctuary.

Lisa Simpson:

What about Bart? I asked if you've seen him!

Comic Book Guy:

I think I saw him at the Noiseland Arcade.

(Lisa looks relieved for a moment but then glares at Comic Book Guy as he pulls out his phone.)

Comic Book Guy:

Ah, video games. What a waste of money. Now to go online and bid $1000 for Itchy & Scratchy corn-cob holders. Terrific, terrific expense.

(Lisa sighs dramatically and storms out of the store as Comic Book Guy mutters happily about his collectibles.)

Fade Out.

Marge

Mission 1: "The Ooga-Booga Mystery"

INT. SIMPSONS LIVING ROOM - DAY

Bart is sitting on the couch, speaking in an unintelligible manner, mumbling something indistinct.

BART

(mumbling)

…squibble, wibble, gloop… ooga-booga…

MARGE

(raising an eyebrow)

Hmmmph, oh Bart, what's causing your ooga-booga talk? My special little guy's noodle has turned to google. The whole town's gone nuts! Security cameras, mysterious vans, crop circles? There's got to be a connection.

(she ponders for a moment)

Maybe the police know something.

EXT. SIMPSONS HOUSE - DAY

Marge walks out the front door, determination in her step. She heads down the street, approaching Chief Wiggum who is standing by his squad car.

MARGE

(urgently)

Chief Wiggum, I need you to find out what happened to Bart. Can you show me where the crop circle is? There's got to be a clue to curing Bart.

CHIEF WIGGUM

(chuckling)

Aw, that's cute. I'd love to help, but I got sugar withdrawal real bad. The donut store is closed and I've got a monkey on my back screaming for crawlers.

(he suddenly grimaces)

Oh… oh, he's screamin'.

MARGE

(gritting her teeth)

Come on, Chief, this is serious!

CHIEF WIGGUM

(waving his hand dismissively)

I'm serious too. I can't focus without my donuts. You'll have to take care of this one yourself.

MARGE

(determined)

Fine. I'll be back with donuts!

EXT. LARD LAD DONUTS - DAY

Marge storms up to the donut van and knocks on the door. The vendor hands her a box of donuts. She quickly grabs them and hurries back to Chief Wiggum.

INT. SIMPSONS STREET - DAY

Marge rushes back to Chief Wiggum with a box of donuts in hand.

MARGE

(holding out the donuts)

I've got your donuts, Chief. Now tell me where the crop circle is!

CHIEF WIGGUM

(grabbing the box of donuts eagerly)

Boy, for a busybody housewife, you sure get results. That crop circle's at Cletus' shack.

(He devours a donut greedily, eyes gleaming.)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a truck full of donuts to eat. I'm gonna need a lot of coffee, hehe.

MARGE

(grinning with satisfaction)

Thanks, Chief. I'll handle the rest from here.

(Marge turns and walks off in the direction of Cletus' shack, her face set with determination.)

FADE OUT.

FADE OUT.

Apu

Level 5, Mission 1: Incriminating Caffeine

Scene 1: Kwik-E-Mart Interior

(Apu stands behind the counter, holding a can of Buzz Cola. He looks at it with shame.)

Apu:

How could I, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, betray my loyal customers by selling this toxic fizzy poison? No more! I must atone for this great sin.

(Apu sets the cola can down and marches out of the store with determination.)

Scene 2: Train Station

(Apu arrives at the train station and spots the Cola Truck pulling out of a loading dock. He jumps into his car and follows it.)

Apu (to himself):

I will collect every single box of this vile beverage before it corrupts another innocent palate!

(Apu swerves through traffic, expertly collecting falling Buzz Cola boxes as the truck barrels down the road. The camera pans to show the Cola Truck leading Apu into a shady industrial area.)

Scene 3: Mafia HQ

(The truck stops at a grim-looking warehouse with a large sign that says "Legitimate Business Club." Apu parks nearby and approaches cautiously. Louie, a mafia henchman, steps out of the warehouse.)

Louie:

Hey, buddy. What's with the sneaking around? You lost or something?

Apu:

I demand answers! Why is this Cola Truck delivering its sugary poison here?

Louie (laughing):

Answers? You got guts, pal. But maybe you should worry less about cola and more about keeping all your fingers attached.

(Louie steps closer, his tone turning threatening. Apu's phone buzzes in his pocket. He checks it nervously.)

Fade Out.

Bart

Level 6, Mission 1: Going to the Lu'

Scene 1: Noiseland Arcade

(The arcade is buzzing with sounds of video games and chatter. Bart approaches Apu, who is standing nervously by a pinball machine.)

Bart:

Apu! The aliens are back. We need your help to defeat them!

Apu (panicking):

Aliens? Oh no, no, no! I have dealt with these green menaces before, and I barely survived with my store intact! I am sorry, but I must decline. My octuplets need a father, not an alien-fighting hero.

Bart (disappointed):

Fine. Some help you are.

(Bart notices Otto standing nearby, casually playing a racing game with his headphones on.)

Bart (approaching Otto):

Otto! We need to get the kids to safety. Can you help me?

Otto (grinning):

Dude, aliens are totally bogus, but I'm always down for a road trip. Take the School Bus, man! Just watch out for the stick shift. It's kinda wonky.

Bart:

Got it. Let's do this!

Scene 2: Driving the School Bus

(Bart gets into the School Bus. A timer appears on the screen as the player starts driving through Springfield, picking up children at various stops.)

Audio Cues:

Child 1 (boarding):

"Aliens? Cool! Can I keep one as a pet?"

Child 2:

"I'm scared! Drive faster!"

Child 3:

"I call dibs on the window seat!"

(Bart must navigate obstacles, avoid traffic, and collect all 17 children while staying within the time limit.)

Bart (to themselves):

Come on, come on! We can't let the aliens get to Krustylu Studios before we do!

Scene 3: Krustylu Studios

(Bart pulls into the parking lot of Krustylu Studios, narrowly avoiding hitting a stack of Itchy & Scratchy props. The children cheer as they disembark.)

Child (waving):

"Thanks, mister! You're my hero!"

(Barney Gumble stumbles out of the studio, holding a half-empty soda cup and looking confused.)

Barney:

Hey, uh, what's with all the screaming kids? Is there a new Itchy & Scratchy episode or something?

Bart:

Barney, we're dealing with aliens! Are you sober enough to help?

Barney (grinning):

Aliens, huh? That explains the bright lights I saw... or was that the vending machine? Anyway, count me in!

Bart:

Good. We've got a lot of work to do.

(The screen fades to black, and a "Mission Complete" banner appears with a prompt to start the next mission.)

Fade Out.

Homer

Level 7, Mission 1: Rigor Motors

Scene 1: Inside the Simpsons' House

(Camera pans into the Simpsons' living room. Lisa is pacing back and forth, clearly worried, while Homer is sitting on the couch watching TV.)

Lisa:

Dad! This is serious. There are zombies everywhere, and we need to prepare!

Homer: (grumbling, eyes glued to the TV)

Relax, Lisa. They're not coming here. Plus, the baseball game is on!

(Suddenly, the TV cuts to a live broadcast of Kent Brockman being attacked by zombies.)

Kent Brockman (on TV):

This just in... AHHHHH!

(The broadcast ends abruptly. Lisa turns to Homer with a look of urgency.)

Lisa:

See? This is what I'm talking about! I'll go look for supplies. You, uh... do something useful!

Homer: (getting up reluctantly)

Fine, fine. I'll go see if Flanders has something we can use.

---

Scene 2: Flanders' House

(Homer arrives at the Flanders' doorstep. The door opens to reveal Ned, holding a Bible and looking nervous.)

Homer:

Heya, Flanders. Got any stuff to help with, you know, zombies?

Ned:

Well, gosh-darn-it, Homer, I don't know if I can just give away my First Aid kit—

Homer: (interrupting)

C'mon, Ned! Don't be selfish. Do you want your zombie neighbors to not patch themselves up?

Ned: (sighing)

Fine, neighborino. Take it, but remember to stay righteous!

(Homer grabs the First Aid kit and leaves.)

---

Scene 3: Cletus' Shack

(Homer approaches Cletus, who is sitting on his porch with a shotgun.)

Homer:

Hey, hillbilly! Got anything to keep zombies out?

Cletus:

Well, reckon you could take them wooden boards in my driveway. Just don't touch my possum traps!

Homer: (grabbing the boards)

Perfect! I'll just be on my way.

---

Scene 4: Moe's House

(Homer knocks on Moe's door. Moe opens it, looking more depressed than usual.)

Homer:

Hey Moe, got a chainsaw I can borrow? You know, for zombie stuff.

Moe: (sighing)

Yeah, sure, Homer. I ain't got much to live for anyway. Here, take it.

Homer: (awkwardly)

Uh, thanks? You, uh, might wanna see someone about that.

(Homer takes the chainsaw and heads home.)

---

Scene 5: The Simpsons' House

(Homer arrives back at the house with the supplies.)

Mission Complete!

Scene 6: Springfield Elementary School Playground

(Homer arrives at the school playground, where Comic Book Guy is standing near the jungle gym.)

Comic Book Guy:

Ah, finally, someone capable of handling a crisis. Prepare yourself, mortal. The next stage of our battle against the undead awaits!

Storyboard

Note

My storyboard wasn't as thorough as I hoped it to be but I believe it was still a good representation of what the first missions was going to look like.

Treatment

Note

My treatment came out really well and it proved really effective

Characteristics & context in media and communication

Note

Learning about contextual factors proved very educational and interesting because I learnt about target audiences on a broader spectrum
